Fountain, sought after lawyer, legislator,
and difficult chief of Indian and outlaw
fighting armed forces, drove his wagon across
the wild and lonely Tularosa basin of
New Mexico. He and his eight-year-old
son have been returning domestic after a twoweek
meeting with a grand jury to obtain
indictments of ranchers for livestock theft.
Albert’s spouse, Mariana Pérez de
Ovante, believing not anyone could attack
a guy touring with a bit boy, had
begged Albert to take Henry with him.
When Albert acquiesced, she asked
Henry to be her knight and safeguard his
father. She gave him a carved ivory
horsehead watch fob to remind him of
her satisfaction in his courage.
The old proof are that on that
windy, freezing day, the 1st of February
1896, Albert and Henry Fountain disappeared.
Their our bodies by no means discovered, their
empty wagon miles out within the desert,
their horses long past, and close to the place their
wagon became off the most highway, a patch
of blood-soaked sand glistening in the
sunlight. Legends say Henry survived
to avenge Albert’s homicide, yet no one
knows for sure….
